Migration is not the default recommendation
Plenty of bookkeepers will move you onto whichever platform they prefer to work in. That is a cost and a disruption borne by you for someone else’s convenience. Where a migration genuinely is the right call, usually because the current platform cannot do something the business now needs, the whole move is handled: data, history, opening balances, bank feeds, payroll and reconciliation back to the closing position on the old system.
Setting it up so it stays useful
A clean setup means a chart of accounts that reflects how this business actually makes money, bank feeds and rules that code the predictable transactions automatically, document capture so receipts are dealt with at the point of spending, and tracking categories where job or division level reporting is needed.
Done properly, the ongoing bookkeeping effort drops substantially, because the system handles the routine volume and a person only handles what is genuinely ambiguous.
Common questions
Should I move from MYOB to Xero?
Only if there is a reason. Xero generally has the edge on ease of use and integrations, MYOB on built in payroll depth for some businesses. If your current platform does what you need, the better investment is usually fixing the setup rather than changing the software.
Will I lose my history if I migrate?
No. Historical data and opening balances are brought across, and the new file is reconciled back to the closing position on the old one so the two agree before anything is switched off.
