Xero vs MYOB in 2026: Which Platform Is Right for Your Business?

An honest comparison of Australia’s two leading cloud accounting platforms — pricing, features, and who each suits best.

Xero vs MYOB in 2026: Which Platform Is Right for Your Business?

Choosing the right accounting software is one of the most consequential tech decisions a small business makes. In Australia, the two dominant players are Xero and MYOB — and while both are solid platforms, they suit different types of businesses. Here’s our honest comparison for 2026.

Pricing

Xero

  • Starter: $29/month — Limited to 20 invoices and 5 bills per month
  • Standard: $47/month — Unlimited invoices and bills
  • Premium: $65/month — Adds multi-currency support
  • MYOB

  • Lite: $25/month — Basic invoicing and expenses
  • Pro: $55/month — Full accounting, payroll, and bills
  • AccountRight Plus: $70/month — Advanced job tracking and inventory
  • Verdict: Xero’s Standard plan offers better value for most small businesses. MYOB’s Lite plan is cheaper but significantly limited.

    User Experience

Xero has consistently been praised for its clean, intuitive interface. Navigation is straightforward, and most functions are accessible within two or three clicks. The mobile app is excellent for invoicing and receipt capture on the go.

MYOB has improved significantly in recent years but still feels more complex, particularly for new users. The desktop legacy of AccountRight shows through in some areas of the interface, though the cloud-first MYOB Business platform is catching up.

Verdict: Xero wins on ease of use, especially for business owners who aren’t accounting-trained.

    Bank Feeds and Automation

Both platforms offer automated bank feeds from all major Australian banks. Xero’s bank reconciliation process is slightly more streamlined, with better AI-powered categorisation that improves over time. MYOB’s bank feeds are reliable but the matching process requires a few more manual steps.

Verdict: Xero has a slight edge, particularly when combined with Hubdoc for document capture.

    Payroll

This is where the comparison gets interesting. MYOB includes payroll in its Pro and AccountRight plans at no extra cost, covering Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting, leave management, and superannuation processing.

Xero includes basic payroll in its Standard and Premium plans for businesses with fewer than five employees. Beyond that, you’ll need Xero’s separate payroll add-on, which adds to the monthly cost.

Verdict: MYOB wins on payroll value, particularly for businesses with larger teams.

    Integrations

Xero’s app marketplace is one of its greatest strengths. With over 1,000 integrations — from CRMs to inventory management to e-commerce platforms — Xero connects with virtually any tool a modern business uses. Popular integrations include Stripe, Shopify, HubSpot, and Deputy.

MYOB’s integration library is smaller but covers the essentials. It integrates well with Australian-specific platforms and has strong connections with major banks and payroll services.

Verdict: Xero wins decisively on integrations and ecosystem breadth.

    Our Recommendation

For most Australian small businesses, Xero is the stronger choice in 2026. Its ease of use, superior automation, vast integration library, and excellent mobile experience make it the better platform for businesses that want to modernise their financial operations.

MYOB remains a solid option for businesses that need robust payroll built in, or those already invested in the MYOB ecosystem with staff trained on the platform.
