Agriculture and primary production

Alpine Accounts provides bookkeeping and management accounts for farms and primary producers across the Fraser Coast, the Mary Valley, Childers and wider Queensland. Primary production breaks the assumptions most accounting software ships with: income arrives in a few large lumps rather than monthly, costs are incurred a full season before any revenue, and the profitability question is almost always per enterprise rather than per year. The work centres on making those numbers visible in time to act on them.

Income in lumps, costs all year

A cane grower, a grazier and a horticulturalist all share the same shape: you spend continuously for months and get paid in a handful of transactions. Monthly reporting applied to that pattern shows eleven bad months and one spectacular one, which tells you nothing.

Structured properly, costs accumulate against the season or the enterprise they belong to, so the result is measured over the cycle that actually matters rather than the calendar.

Which enterprise is actually earning

Most farms run more than one thing, whether that is cattle alongside cropping, or several blocks with different histories. Without enterprise level costing, the strong performer quietly funds the weak one and the decision to change never gets made because nobody can see it.

Splitting costs by enterprise takes some setup, but it is usually the single change that pays for itself fastest, because it answers questions that have been guesses for years.

Records that support what you claim

Primary production attracts a number of specific concessions and credits, including fuel tax credits for off road use. Every one of them depends on the underlying records being kept properly at the time, not reconstructed later.

We keep fuel, plant, livestock and input records in the shape those calculations require. The claims themselves are made through your registered agent.

Common questions

Can you track costs by paddock or by enterprise?

Yes. Tracking categories are set up around how your operation is actually run, so cattle, cropping or individual blocks report separately as well as together.

Do you handle fuel tax credit records?

We keep fuel purchase and usage records in the shape the calculation requires, split between on road and off road use, so the claim is supportable. Alpine Accounts is not a registered BAS or tax agent and the claim is lodged by your registered agent.

Our income is wildly unpredictable. Is forecasting realistic?

More useful, not less. The point is not to predict the season, it is to know what the operation costs to run through it, and at what income level the year works. That is a question the books can answer.
